There is not much information about the roots of the seven card stud poker available and it's history is still a matter of debate. There are many theories about the history of Poker but none of them was ever affirmed. Most people believe it derives from an old German game called "Pochen" (English: knocking) dating from the middle of the 15th century. "Pochen" later travelled all around Europe and evolved into a game called "Poque" mostly played in France. Both games are quite different though but there are similarities between them.

7 Card Stud poker in its initial form grew up during the time of the American Civil War and stayed the most popular poker variant for 2 decades between the 50's and 70's of 19th century. Although Texas Hold em overtook Stud Poker as the most renowned poker variation in the USA casinos after that, 7 card stud remained a very popular game especially amongst home players and still is.
