Rise – You increase the bet by placing more money than the bets other players have placed before you.

Keep reading so you can get a more clear idea when and what actions you have to take in different situations.

When you should bet?
 1. You should bet when you have a strong hand but you do not want to get your opponents scared. So don't put big money. In case somebody thinks you are bluffing and increases the stake then it is good for you.
 2. If you have a good but not that strong hand then you should also bet so you can eliminate the players with weak hands which can turn in to stronger ones further in the game.

So now you see why the poker is considered a complicated game - two equal actions meaning two completely different things.

When should you pay?
You should pay when you have a strong hand or a good one with a tendency to become stronger.

When should you raise?
You should raise when you want the other players to get scared or when you have a strong hand.

When should you check?
You should check when you have a hand which is not that good. Everybody checks so why not do the same?

Check and rise
Check and raise is an approach with a single aim - to skip betting and to hope somebody else will bet after you so you can rise later. This is a common approach if you are one of the first players in a given turn. You should of course apply the check and rise method only if you have a good hand, otherwise you risk losing a lot. Be careful and watch closely the player who placed the bet after you checked as he might also have a strong hand. If that happens then you both take high risk and the winner will be the one with the better hand.

Be unpredictable
Don't always follow one and the same strategy. Be unpredictable. There are lots of experienced poker player who will easily learn your strategy and will be aware of your intentions after every move of yours. Losing a couple of hands is not that bad as that will make the other players under estimate you further in the game.

Always ask yourself different questions. Think! Why the other players do what they do – why they check, why they raise. Are they normally so aggressive players? What do their bets reveal? Is that bluffing? Is your hand strong enough?

Be realistic and think smart!

Good luck!
